Bullying

​

Bullying is defined as unwanted aggressive behavior; observed or perceived power imbalance; and repetition of behaviors or high likelihood of repetition (CDC, 2014). Types of bullying are social, cyber, physical, and verbal.

Research states that constant bullying can lead to or worsen feelings of  exclusion, isolation, rejection, and despair. This can also contribute to depression and anxiety, which can contribute to suicidal behavior (stopbullying.gov).  

Bullying can happen anywhere, but happens most at schools, on the school grounds and on the bus. Only 20 to 30% of students who are bullied inform adults about their experiences. Studies show that when people intervene, bullying stops within 10 seconds 57% of the time (stopbullying.gov).

Mental Health

​

Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood (mentalhealth.gov). Mental health may interfere with your ability to Live, Love, and Laugh.

Self-Esteem

​

Self-esteem is how we value ourselves, it can be positive or negative. It is how we perceive our value to the world and how valuable we think we are to others. Self-esteem affects our trust in others, our relationships, our work – nearly every part of our lives. Positive self-esteem gives us the strength and flexibility to take charge of our lives and grow from our mistakes without the fear of rejection (UC Davis Health).

Social Entrepreneurship 

​

Social Entrepreneurship is identifying and addressing a problem in the community. While filling the gaps that are unmet by organizations while earning a profit and making a difference. Social entrepreneurship creates dignity, a sense of investment, empowerment, social connections, career opportunities, and hope.

Suicide Prevention & Awareness

​

Suicide is the act of killing yourself voluntarily and intentionally, most often as a result of depression or other mental illness. One reason that suicide is such a tragedy is that most self-inflicted deaths are potentially preventable. With help through an immediate crisis, many suicidal people change their minds. Suicide is currently the 10th leading cause of death in the United States. This is an annual suicide rate of approximately 44,193 people. Suicide is currently ranked as the second leading cause of death for youth (15 to 24 years old) in the United States behind accidents/road traffic. Please know that suicide is preventable. Most suicidal individuals desperately want to live; they are just unable to see alternatives to their problems. Suicide occurs across all age, economic, social, racial and ethnic boundaries. There are warning signs, we just have to know how to recognize them (wmich.edu).

Toxic Relationships

​

A toxic relationship is any relationship that is unfavorable to you or others. Toxic Relationships are unsafe, unhealthy, hazardous, injurious, and deadly. These relationships can be made up of poor choices, bad decisions, and wrong turns in life. Healthy relationships involve work, discipline, motivation, purpose, intent, and desire (Psychology Today).

Trauma

​

Trauma is an emotional response to a terrible event such as an accident, rape or natural disaster. These experiences often include physical, emotional, or sexual abuse to parental divorce or the incarceration of a parent or guardian. Immediately after the event, shock and denial are typical. Longer term reactions include unpredictable emotions, flashbacks, strained relationships and even physical symptoms like headaches or nausea. While these feelings are normal, some people have difficulty moving on with their lives.
